Drab to Fab: 90s Kitchen Redesign Part 1

July 28, 2020

Okay, now it’s finally time to share a little insight into my day job! I am usually building projects like gyms, banks, or office spaces. But today, I am working on a very special project: my parents’ kitchen!

So, they have been in the same house for 30 years (easy to keep up with- they’ve been there since I was born!), and as you can imagine, it needed some updating. While they did take down the wallpaper (it was navy blue floral), it had not taken on a major transformation yet.

Here is the before:

(the trash can really makes this pic straight out of Better Homes and Gardens– I kid )

It was the typical stained cabinetry and cream Corian countertops of that era. There also was large tile throughout, and while it served them well for almost 31 years, it was time to brighten things up and make the space more modern.

Demo:

First, we demoed everything out. Peep the remnants of that wallpaper left over.

Second, we took up the tile and carried the same hardwoods that are in the rest of the house through the kitchen. Not only does this provide a more cohesive look, but also makes it look more spacious throughout the kitchen.

Wall Color:

Paint colors are always tricky especially when dealing with a house that has been almost every color from maroon to yellow. We tried several attempts at finding a neutral gray, ultimately deciding on Sherwin Williams Repose Gray and Sherwin Williams Snowbound for the trim. A shade of white is a great idea for trim in a kitchen or any room. If you ever decide to go back to maroon (but really, I hope not), you can do so without having to redo the trim work.

Cabinets:

Equally as tricky are cabinetry colors: we knew we wanted something clean and timeless, so we stuck with the neutral palette of grays and white again. The cabinet color is Snowbound again, which ties the trim in as well. I thought it would make it a little more fun if we did the island and the hood a different color to bring contrast to the room, so we decided on a darker gray, Sherwin Williams’ Gauntlet Gray. The paint colors not only are cleaner and brighter in the space, but also make it look so much larger than before.

Appliances:

I don’t want to get too far into the appliances since I am not an expert on plumbing and electrical, but I will say the highlight of the space is the Subzero fridge. My mom decided on an all-fridge (no freezer side to it) since she has a deep freeze and doesn’t use it much. It is so spacious and is probably the biggest splurge/best purchase of the appliances. If you’re looking to upgrade, this is where to do it. Appliance links below!

Stay tuned for lighting, backsplash, and the quartz countertops!
